BLOG TOUR: Author Interview with Wendy Holden

Today, Claudia Carroll has kindly stopped by to answer some questions. Claudia has published a number of Contemporary Romance/ Chick Lit books. Her latest, Our Little Secret is a bit more of a thriller. Its published by Avon Books and is out now!

Without giving too much away about the plot of the book, explain what it is about?
Did you ever see the old movie, All About Eve with Bette Davis? It’s basically about a good deed that comes back to bite you. Just like the song in Wicked (my all time favourite musical) about no good deed going unpunished.

How does this book differ from other books you have written?
I think this is more of a ‘domestic noir’ for me and it’s a little darker than my previous books. The movie All About Eve, was a huge inspiration point for me, so I got to wondering – suppose you had a middle aged, older woman who, with no motive other than kindness and a genuine altruism, decides to help a younger woman, who needs a bit of a leg up in her own career. But of course there’s a twist, and pretty soon, my leading character comes to deeply regret ever having giving this young one the time of day.

Which character was the easiest/more relate-able to you?
It’s always fun to write baddies, so I suppose I really enjoying writing the character of Lauren, who is basically all sweetness and light on the surface, but tough as a boot just underneath and with an ambition that’s terrifying. Someone who would walk all over you, just to advance their own career. So the moral of the story is—- be on the lookout for Lauren’s everywhere…

What is your process for writing a book? Do you have any rituals or a favourite place to write your novels?
I write from anywhere and everywhere, really. I grab the time whenever I can – I wrote my first three books in the dressing room of the soap opera I’m in, when I was supposed to be learning my lines! At the moment, I’m lucky enough to be writing full time, so most of my work is done at my desk, which thankfully is nice and quiet.

Are you working on anything just now and can you tell us anything about them?
As a matter of fact, I do have some very exciting news! I have a brand new book coming out in hardback later this year – it’s called SECRETS OF PRIMROSE SQUARE and I’m ridiculously happy with it – stay toooned!!!

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I’m a great theatre and movie buff, so I’m usually to be found at a show or a movie at the weekends. Love it. Can’t wait for the Oscars this year.

Which authors have been an inspiration to you?
I love to read across all genres, but in terms of authors, I do have a special soft spot for Irish writers. Sinead Moriarty, Liz Nugent, Patricia Scanlan, Sheila O’ Flanagan and Marion Keyes in particular I just adore.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what five things would you want with you?
Sunblock. Nutella. My phone ( to ring for help.) my Kindle. And…….a single engine Cessna light aircraft .I’ve done a few lessons and have a secret dream that I could fly myself without an instructor – I know, dream on!.

Claudia was born in Dublin and is a graduate of UCD, the College of Music and of the Gaiety School of Acting. Since then she has worked extensively as an actress on the Irish stage, but is probably best known for her role as TV’s Nicola Prendergast in the long running Dublin soap opera, ‘Fair City.’.
